Biped is a Swiss startup revolutionizing the mobility of visually impaired individuals with its innovative AI technology. Founded in Lausanne in 2021, Biped has developed a smart navigation harness that uses autonomous driving technology to guide people with visual impairments. This wearable device, which can be worn on the shoulders, is equipped with 3D cameras and AI algorithms to provide real-time guidance and obstacle avoidance, thus enhancing the independence and safety of its users.

The genesis of Biped was inspired by a chance encounter in summer 2020, when co-founder Maël Fabien noticed a blind person struggling to cross the street while receiving directions via a video call. This sparked the idea to use AI for detecting obstacles automatically, leading to the creation of Biped. The startup has worked closely with the Jules Gonin Ophthalmic Hospital in Lausanne and involved users extensively in the development and testing phases, resulting in the creation of six prototypes before commercializing the first market product in December 2022.

Biped's technology is at the cutting edge, incorporating advancements in edge computing and deep learning algorithms that were not possible even five years ago. The company has partnered with the Honda Research Institute to further enhance its software, demonstrating its commitment to using state-of-the-art technology for obstacle detection and collision prediction.

The startup has recently secured CHF 1.2 million in funding to fuel its expansion into the US and European markets, with backing from a host of renowned investors and support from organizations like Venture Kick and the Future of Health Grant. This investment is a testament to the tech community's confidence in Biped's mission to improve the lives of visually impaired individuals by offering them freedom and autonomy of movement.

Biped aims to make the world collision-free, not just for the visually impaired but also for elderly people, wheelchair users, and potentially even construction workers or cyclists in the future. The company's journey reflects a blend of technological innovation, entrepreneurial spirit, and a deep commitment to making a tangible difference in the lives of people with disabilities.
